Eat, Pray, Learn with us this Shavuot!

Shavuot is one of the major festivals in Jewish life, marking both the agricultural harvest in the Land of Israel and the spiritual moment of revelation at Mount Sinai, when the Torah is understood to have been given to the Jewish people. It comes at the end of the counting of the Omer, seven weeks after Passover, completing the journey from physical liberation to spiritual covenant.

Traditionally, Shavuot is celebrated with a blend of study, ritual, and communal gathering. Many communities stay up through the night for Tikkun Leil Shavuot, an all-night learning session engaging with Torah, wisdom texts, and contemporary questions. The Book of Ruth is read during the festival, highlighting themes of loyalty, belonging, and chosen community. It is also customary to eat dairy foods, symbolising sweetness, nourishment, and the richness of Torah. In many communities, the Ten Commandments are also read publicly during Shavuot services, recalling the central moment of revelation at Sinai and renewing our collective connection to covenant and responsibility.

More than a historical or agricultural milestone, Shavuot invites us to consider what it means to receive wisdom anew in every generation, and how sacred teachings shape our responsibilities to one another and to the world.
